REPLAY Screen Data
Sheet
12th October, Issue
15
Some programs have special screen formats, and therefore
need slight alterations to their video data. Although the later versions of
REPLAY have certain data built-in, these programs will only be recognised if the
name is spelt correctly in uppercase letters. The Master version of REPLAY
contains many of the programs listed here, and so the user will not need to
enter data that often.
A few games also need program alteration codes to be entered
before the game will work correctly, these alterations are listed in the 'REPLAY
Game Alteration sheets'.
How to enter the Screen Data
BBC B and B+ REPLAYs only, Master users refer to User
Guide.
First transfer the program as normal from tape to
disk.
Get into the main REPLAY menu, then enter the 'Edit file'
menu by pressing number '4', followed by the letter corresponding to the program
to be edited, eg. 'A', or 'B', etc.
If the Mode needs changing, then press the letter 'M', and
enter first the screen mode (the first number, ie. a number from 0 to 7),
followed by pressing the <RETURN> key, and then enter the screen size (the
second number, ie. either 1, 8, 10, 16, or 20 - do not enter the letter
'k'), followed by <RETURN>.
To enter the video data, press the letter 'V' from the Edit
file menu. You will then be asked 'Register ?', to which you should respond with
the first number of the video data (eg. the '6' in '6,16'), followed by pressing
<RETURN>, and then respond to the 'Data ?' prompt by typing the second
number (eg. the '16' in '6,16'), followed by <RETURN>.
Video data is listed as multiple groups of two numbers. The
first number in each group is the video register number, and the second is the
video data value.
To exit the video data entering stage, simply press
<RETURN> by itself (ie. without entering any data) when the 'Register ?'
prompt appears.
Colours are entered by pressing the letter 'C' from the Edit
file menu. You will then be asked the 'Logical Colour ?' value, which is the
first number in the group of two numbers (ie. the '1' in '1,7'), which should be
typed in, followed by <RETURN>. Then the 'Actual Colour ?' value should be
typed in, which is the second number in the group (ie. the '7' in '1,7'),
followed by <RETURN>.
To exit the colour altering mode, simply press
<RETURN> by itself (without entering any data).
To exit the Edit file menu, press the letter
E.
The program should now run correctly, although some games
need program alteration data to be entered as well (see the REPLAY game
alteration sheet),
Problems ?
If you have problems entering the data, and have read
through all the instructions, then we will be happy to help you during office
hours on our usual telephone number.
If you have a game that is not listed here, but is giving
problems (ie. screen display goes haywire, or too many lines displayed), then
contact us, as we may have the data you need.
Hints for working out screen data.
The most common alterations needed are Mode/Screen
size, Colours, and alteration to video registers 6 and 7.
The values for these can easily be worked out by the average
user who knows something about how the screen displays its data, or
......
..... simply try different values until it comes right
!
The first thing to get right is the Mode, so try different
values until you can actual see something on the screen that looks at least
vaguely correct.
If the screen is 'broken up', and you have tried all the
different modes available (0 to 7), then you will need to try different values
for video registers 1 and 2. Have a look at the games listed on this sheet, and
try entering the data that is listed for other games.
Assuming that the screen looks reasonably okay, the
next step is to alter video register number 6 until the full number of lines
is displayed. Then try different values of register 7 until it is centred
correctly.
If you discover the screen data for a program not listed,
then please contact us, so that we can pass on the information to other
users.
Notes on using the Master to BBC 'B' conversion
Unfortunately, due to the differences between the Master
hardware and the BBC 'B' hardware, it is not possible to use joysticks in games
that are designed for the BBC 'B' but are loaded into a Master. In theory, to
get joysticks to work, one would simply need to alter the OS1.20 to look for the
A/D converter at a different address, which might give a satisfactory
solution.
Notes on using REPLAY, BBC B & B+ versions
only
Sometimes a 'random byte' is left in the system and as a
result the screen message 'previous file not saved to' occurs when a disk has
just been initialised for use with REPLAY. To overcome this, re-format the disk,
type '?&906=15' and press <RETURN>. Then initialise the disk as
normal.
We are told that in order to save Eagle Empire, Killer
Gorilla, and Space Fighter to disk it may be necessary to switch off the
computer after creating the file for these programs.
If you have the original version of REPLAY (the code number
will NOT be prefixed with an 'A' on the blue plastic cover), some of the
programs lsited may not load into the computer, or won't transfer to disk. We
can upgrade the REPLAY ROM to overcome most of these problem tapes for
£3.00 all inclusive. Previously made disks should still be use-able.
Telephone for details.
Notes on using REPLAY, all versions
If you install a Rom board into your computer and find that
previously save programs are unusable, then attention should be given to a) the
siting of the BASIC ROM (not applicable to Master Users); and b) the option to
turn the 'ROMs off as shown in the User Guide. It is important for the BASIC ROM
priority to be maintained when the Rom board is fitted. The 'ROMs off'
instruction does not affect the BASIC ROM.
These data sheets are issued free of charge and are sent out
on receipt of a stamped self-addressed envelope (SAE).
Notes on some programs
Gareth Lon has suggested a way of enhancing the graphics on
Mode 5 programs, such as Repton, Thunderstruck, etc. His method is to change the
Mode to 1, and then alter the program using codes 02,48,1C and video registers
as follows: 1,28 2,50.
With some programs, you may find that the 'randomness'
disappears, one such case being Scrabble, where the same tiles may be produced
every time you load the program. It is therefore necessary to experiment by
saving the programs at different stages of the game, but preferably as soon as
possible.
Dr Who and the Mines of Terror - to run the disk version,
type the following instead of SHIFT-BREAK: *LOAD !BOOT <RETURN>
?&210E=0 <RETURN> CALL &2000 <RETURN>
We regret
.....that we cannot upgrade BBC B and B+ REPLAYs to the
Master version, nor will programs saved on one system work on another, due to
the fact that the Master version and BBC versions are completely different in
design of both software and hardware.
