If the Acorn DFS chip is not an original Acorn part, then there may have been a problem when the EPROM was programmed, ie. a fault occurred during programming or a dodgy DFS ROM image was used. There are a few dodgy ROM images out there - there is a version of Inter-Word floating about which doesn't work properly if you try to use the printer setup or print options, for example. To test this out you will need to get hold of the Acorn DFS 1.20 ROM image (available in several places on the Internet), a ROM image capturing programme, and a disc file-comparision utility. Once you have all these, take a disc copy of your DFS EPROM and use the file-comparison routine to compare this with the "good" ROM image. If there are any problems, you will need a new DFS ROM. The second thing to check is that you are using the right version of DFS for the disc controller in your Beeb. To identify which controller you are using, look inside the BBC for two chips right in front of the keyboard connector. The sockets are numbered IC78 and IC3. IC78 is the floppy disc controller. If there is a single chip at IC78 then you have the older 8271 FDC and the DFS ROM you have is fine. If there is a separate board mounted on the socket of IC78 then you have a newer 1770 controller which requires a different DFS. The version numbers for this DFS are 2.xx and when installed, the start-up message reads "Acorn 1770 DFS". Hope this helps! Ian |
