Hi,

If it used to have a ROM board in it, then its quite possible that when the board was fitted it required the BASIC ROM to be inserted on the board as opposed to in the 5 Sideways ROM sockets on the main PCB.

I expect whoever removed the board never replaced the BASIC ROM on the Mainboard.

For a BASIC Tape only BBC you should have 2 ROMS in the leftmost sockets them being the OS ROM and BASIC respectivly.
