? disk drive fault (BBC B)

I have a BBC model B, and my children wanted to try some of the software, but were disappointed as we could not get the disk drive to work! When I inserted the disk and pressed SHIFT and BREAK, the following message was displayed: 'sector not found at 00/00'. When I typed in *CAT it said 'sector not found at 00/02'. In both cases, the drive made a continous whirring sound, displayed the error message, then the drive cut off.

Anyone have any ideas of what's wrong, and how to rectify the situation? My hubby is happy to do any electrical repairs/testing/ soldering etc., once we've located the problem!

You'll make the children's day if it can be fixed...they can't wait to use the programs!
